SpaceX’s ambitious Starship program, aimed at revolutionizing space travel, faced a setback during its latest test flight when both the spacecraft and its booster exploded just minutes after reaching space. The incident occurred on Saturday, November 18, 2023, as the Starship ascended from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
The initial stages of the flight proceeded as planned, with the Starship successfully separating from its Super Heavy booster and reaching an altitude of approximately 91 miles (148 kilometers). However, about eight minutes into the flight, the Starship encountered an anomaly that triggered its self-destruct system, leading to an explosion. Shortly thereafter, the booster also detonated over the Gulf of Mexico.
Despite this setback, SpaceX engineers remain optimistic about the Starship program and are already investigating the cause of the incident. Preliminary analysis suggests that the explosion may have been caused by a problem with the Starship’s header tanks, which store pressurized helium used for fuel transfer.

“We had a successful ascent and separation, but unfortunately experienced two anomalies during descent,” SpaceX stated in a post-launch update. “The first anomaly occurred during propellant header tank pressurization, leading to an uncontrolled descent and RUD (Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly) of Starship. The second anomaly occurred shortly after landing of the Super Heavy booster.”
While the loss of the Starship and its booster is a significant setback for the program, it is important to note that test flights are designed to identify and address potential issues before the spacecraft is used for crewed missions. SpaceX has a history of overcoming setbacks and learning from mistakes, and the company is confident that it can resolve the issues identified during this test flight and continue its pursuit of making Starship a reality.
